The Senior Help Line has been active in Cavan for almost 14 years, with a strong team of volunteers and the great work by co-ordinator Mary Cooke, it has been a great success.

The Help Line has moved home a couple of times over the years but have come to rest in the Bridge Street Centre which provides a comfortable, quiet and confidential place for the volunteers to work from.

Well done all, especially those of you who received your certificates marking five and ten years service to the Help Line. Photos to follow!

Facilities at the centre include a fully equiped kitchen with five work stations, computer access consisting of nine computers together with a spacious boardroom equipped with a plasma television. Each floor has tea/coffee making facilities and the building is fully accessible to individuals with disabilities.

The centre is currently taking bookings for Autumn 2012 and would welcome enquiries from any new groups.

Launch of the Yellow Flag Programme

Olympic Silver Medalist, John Joe Nevin dropped in to show his support for the "Yellow Flag" programme.

The Yellow Flag Programme provides a practical series of 8 steps that brings issues of interculturalism, equality and diversity into the whole-school programme and allows schools to apply them to the day to day running of the school. It works with students, staff, management, parents and wider community groups so that issues of diversity and equality are not merely seen as "school subjects" but can be understood and taken outside the school setting into everyone's personal lives. On completing the programme, the school will be assessed externally and awarded its "Yellow Flag" in recognition of its work in promoting diversity and inclusion.

The Programme was launched by Mr Jack Keyes, Cavan County Manager.

The Bridge Street Centre hosted an enjoyable and informative Open Day on Friday 5^th July during the recent Bridge Street Festival.

The open day gave the public an opportunity to view the centre, see the impressive facilities on offer and to meet with, and learn about, the wide range of community and voluntary groups and organisations that regularly use the centre.

In addition to some of the groups obtaining new members on the day, they also found it invaluable in helping to forge new relationships, and in establishing and strengthening vital links, especially between groups with common and shared objectives. These new relationships should prove to be beneficial to their work and service provision to their clients and members alike.

The Breffni Belles women’s group prepared refreshments for our visitors, while arts facilitator Kim Doherty showcased a claying modelling workshop on the Youth Floor, with some members of Cavan Foroige Group, ably assisted by recently elected Cavan Town Mayor, Cllr. Jacqui Lewis.

We wish to thank everyone that took part in the open day, notably the service users who operate from the centre: Breffni Community Employment, YAP, Cavan/Monaghan Supported Employment, Tearmann Domestic Violence Services and the Cavan Traveller Movement, and in addition, the many groups that regularly use the centre, including: HSE, Breffni Belles, St. Clare’s National School, Cavan Baptist Church, Breffni Blues, Cavan County Childcare Committee, Cavan Sports Partnership, CAWT, Cavan Community & Voluntary Forum, Cavan Social Inclusion Measures Group, Kim Doherty Arts Facilitator, Cavan Parent And Toddler Group, Cavan Multicultural Network, Comhairle na Nog, Cavan Foroige Club & Mayor Jacqui Lewis, Cavan Town Women’s Group, Age Friendly Alliance, Co. Fashion Workshop

The successful workshop was aimed at 11-15 year olds, and saw participants explore concepts of fashion, some history of fashion, fashion icons and then make a moodboard with their own ideas.

By the end of the workshop, the participants had learned practical skills and put them to use by upstyling an outfit to bring their ideas to life. See photos below.

The Series takes you through the modified Ashtanga yoga series with a strong focus on correct alignment.

Each class begins with a short opening savasana and some Pranayama followed by warm ups to get you energized.

All classes finish with a hearty savasana to ensure you leave feeling entirely blissed out and completely energized.

The practice of Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient and powerful discipline for cultivating physical, mental and spiritual health. Progressive techniques of breath, posture and movement, cleanse, stretch and strengthen the body as well as focus and calm the mind. Cognitive Empowerment Computer Classes

Launch of the YAP Ireland Annual Report 2013

YAP, one of the Bridge Street Centre's longest standing tenants held the launch of its 2013 Annual Report in the centre on Friday morning 27th June. In addition to speakers representing YAP, and the Child & Family Agency, some of the young people and parents spoke of their valuable experiences of the programme. A video of the work that the young people completed last year with the residents of Castlemanor Nursing Home was shown, to illustrate the type of projects undertaken. Afterwards, there was finger food and refreshments as well as cakes made by the young people in YAP’s cooking group.

Daffodil Day is the biggest and longest running fundraising day for the Irish Cancer Society, Ireland’s national cancer charity; raising money for the Society’s free, nationwide services for those with, and affected by, cancer in Ireland.

If you cannot attend on the 27th, you can make a donation at any time between 23^rd March & 2^nd April at reception in The Bridge Street Centre.

The layout and furniture in the meeting space on the first floor allow multiple set up styles and their versatility means that they are the ideal place for a meeting, workshop, training event, or health & fitness activity such as pilates or yoga. The space also serves as an area for youth activities, e.g. Youth Café, youth groups. This room is equipped with a pool table, 40” Plasma TV and powerpoint facilities, along with a projector and 2m x 1.5m pull down screen.

This floor also includes a computer room fitted with 9 PCs all with full INTERNET ACCESS. The room can also be partitioned between meeting space and computer suite. There is also a meeting room on this floor which is ideal for counselling and mediation services. The room has tea/coffee making facilities is fully accessible to individuals with disabilities.

This room is now available on the following days:

Mondays - 9am - 6pm

Wednesdays - 9am - 6pm

Thursdays - 9am - 5pm

Fridays - 9am - 2pm

The Bridge Street Centre has an upcoming position available for an evening & weekend caretaker, under a community employment/job activation scheme.

To be eligible, you must be:
· In receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance for 12 months or longer
· Live in or close to Cavan town
· Be extremely reliable, punctual and trustworthy
· Clear for Garda Vetting
· Be available to work approx. 3 evenings per week (anytime between 5pm & 11pm, depending on bookings) and alternate Saturdays (between 8.30am & 6pm, depending on bookings) (approx. 12-15 hours per week, less during summer months)
· Have good interpersonal skills
· Interested in meeting & assisting a wide range of community & voluntary groups who use the Centre
· Interested in availing of training opportunities that become available during the 12 months

Duties include opening and closing the Centre (operating the alarm system), receipting monies, setting up rooms for various groups, keeping the Centre clean & tidy.

This is a shared role with a second caretaker. Under the community employment scheme, you will receive an extra €20 apprx. per week along with your SW payment.

The position is for 12 months.

Fáilte Isteach is a community project involving volunteers welcoming migrants through conversational English classes. The project provides the necessary language skills to new migrants in a student-centred, welcoming and inclusive manner while involving older volunteers and recognising their skills, expertise and contribution to the community.

The workshops will run in conjunction with the school term dates. Workshops will run once a week (morning) for two hours.

Volunteers are required to deliver the Failté Isteach programme - see the attached flyer and send it to anyone you think would be interested. Training will be provided.

Supporting People Affected by Mental Ill Health

The course is designed to assist relatives in working on their own recovery, whilst supporting their loved one.

Shine is the national organisation dedicated to upholding the rights and addressing the needs of all those affected by mental ill health, through the promotion and provision of high quality services and working to ensure the continual enhancement of the quality of life of the people it serves.

One of Shine’s main objectives, is to provide support services to the family members of people affected by mental ill health and one of the ways we do this, is through the provision of our Family Education Course; “Recovery and the Family”.

The course can be broken down into 7 sessions, run on a weekly basis, with each session lasting 2 hours in duration. The course is open to all family members and friends who are supporting a person who is affected by mental ill health.

The course is delivered as follows:

Session 1: Relatives Needs in the Recovery Journey

Goal of the session: To gain an understanding of recovery and how relatives may experience it, focusing on recovery for the relatives as opposed to recovery for the individual who is ill.

Session 2: Experiences of People with Mental Health Difficulties

Goal of the session: To gain a better understanding of the triggers and challenges associated with mental ill health.

Session 3: The Admission Process and the Mental Health Services

Goal of the session: To gain a better understanding of the admission process and the services that are available to assist family members.

Session 4: Life Hope, Suicide Prevention and Postvention

Goal of the session: To provide relatives with an insight into suicide prevention and the supports available to people at risk of suicide and their families.

Session 5: Challenging and Overcoming Stigma

Goal of the Session: To gain an understanding of self stigma, disclosure and overcoming stigma.

Session 6: Effective Communication in the Recovery Process

Goal of the session: To gain an insight into the roles we adopt when communicating with others and how to avoid unproductive confrontation.

Session 7: Relatives Self Care in the Recovery Process

Goal of the session: To discuss and understand what self care is and how to develop a personal care plan.
